Welcome to the first issue of the Brookside Institute Journal.
For all of us at Brookside Institute, 2007 was a year of extraordinary growth and change. We moved into a new facility in Newport Beach, CA; we opened the Neuroscience Center; and we added several distinguished and accredited staff members including psychiatrists, an electrophysiologist, masters-level licensed therapists, and other professionals in neuroscience and addiction treatment.

Brookside Institute: The Future is Now

Even as modern medicine was making great strides in treating life threatening diseases such as polio, small pox, cancer and diabetes, those addicted to alcohol and other substances were still being committed to mental institutions or imprisoned for public drunkenness. As late as the 1970’s, the psychiatric and medical community classified the disease as a moral weakness or a symptom of a deeper psychological disorder. In the 1960’s addiction treatment moved toward a more socially acceptable, compassionate model, Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12-Step Program; however, this treatment was not based on any medical or scientific research.

Faces of Brookside: Dr. Jin

Dr. Jin is an electrophysiologist with over 20 years of experience in clinical and psychiatric research. His specialty in electroencephalogram (EEG) is particularly suitable to the work at Brookside Institute. His electrophysiological works have been extended to the studies of neural perceptual coding, mental disorders, substances abuse, genetics, and psychopharmacology. Dr. Jin is an associate professor of psychiatry at University of California, Irvine (UCI), with which he has been affiliated since 1987. He is the Director of the Behavioral EEG Laboratory at UCI Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and the Director of the NeuroScience Center at Brookside Institute in Newport Beach, California. He also serves as a visiting professor at Peking University Institute of Mental Health in Beijing, China.
